Police in East Hartford, Connecticut, are looking for a man who allegedly attempted to rob a KFC at gunpoint after a transaction was declined when he tried to buy a two-piece meal.

What’s wilder than a hungry person who thinks any KFC meal is worth catching an armed robbery charge? A KFC employee who was willing to risk their life to make sure a fast food chain didn’t get robbed.

According to WFSB 3, East Hartford police have described the suspect as a “heavy-set male” who, when he was last seen, wore a full-face mask as he pulled a gun on a cashier at the KFC on Burnside Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Monday.

The suspect had previously ordered the two-piece chicken meal, but the transaction was declined when he tried to pay with his phone. What happened next is almost unbelievable, not because there aren’t heroes out there who don’t wear capes, but because one would be hard pressed to meet any fast food worker who is so dedicated to preventing crime that they would risk getting shot over the contents of their register.

From WFSB:

After talking to the employee, the suspect hung out inside the KFC before going outside.

When he returned, the suspect pulled out a gun and demanded all of the money in the register.

The employee grabbed the gun and refused to give him any money, police said.

When police arrived, the suspect had left on foot heading northbound on Westbrook Street.

Police attempted to find him with a K9 track, which led them to the front door of a home on Tolland Street.

Unfortunately, the suspect was not found at the home.

Fortunately, the valiant employee was not injured during the skirmish, but the suspect is still at large.

“The suspect was not located,” said EHPD spokesman Marc Caruso in a statement, according to Patch. “Thankfully, there were no reported injuries. The investigation is ongoing.”

Be safe out there, y’all. And remember, whatever these food and retail chains are paying you, it ain’t worth your life by a long shot.
