Nintendo Will Come For You
When it comes to protecting its IP, Nintendo doesn’t play and has been cracking down on illegal sharing of ROMs.
Another popular website, ROMUniverse, was hit with a lawsuit from Nintendo in 2019 after the company learned of the website offering unlimited downloads of new and old Nintendo games for an annual fee.
In 2024, streamer EveryGameGuru felt the sting of Nintendo in the form of a lawsuit after the company accused the streamer of broadcasting footage of pirated games, some of them being unreleased Switch games, and providing illegal access to pirated games.
Yuzu, who makes a popular Nintendo Switch emulator, had to open up the piggy bank and pay Nintendo $2.4 million as part of a settlement.
To let folks know they mean business when it comes to protecting their IP, Nintendo updated its Nintendo Switch User Agreement following the release of the Switch 2 by inserting a clause allowing the company to brick your Switch console if the company finds it is being used to play pirated games.
Proceed with caution, Nintendo will find you.
